Brief Biography

Philip Hanson attended the University of Minnesota, graduating Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude. As an undergraduate he won the Martin B. Ruud English Department Award. He enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley, as a Selmer Birkelo Fellow. After completing his doctoral studies, Hanson taught at Ohio University in the English Department.

Hanson’s first book, This Side of Despair: Film and Culture during the Great Depression, is due out in 2007. He has published both fiction and critical essays in some twenty literary reviews and cultural studies journals, including publications in The Journal of American Studies, The Cambridge Quarterly, Other Voices, and The Berkeley Fiction Review. His current areas of research interest include America in the thirties and U.S. immigration history. He is currently Coordinator of the Writing Program and Co-Director of the American Studies Program.
