Brief Biography

Richard W. Stackman (Ph.D.) is an associate professor and director of the Organizational Behavior and Leadership undergraduate program and the Organization Development master’s program in the College of Professional Studies. Prior to coming to the University of San Francisco, Dr. Stackman was on the faculty at the University of Washington-Tacoma and a visiting assistant professor at Georgetown University. Dr. Stackman earned his doctorate in business administration from the University of British Columbia where he was the first recipient of the “Outstanding Teaching by a Doctoral Student” award. His undergraduate degree (cum laude) in business administration is from the University of California, Berkeley. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Beta Gamma Sigma.

Dr. Stackman has taught at the undergraduate and graduate levels. His courses include Organizations in Context, Organizational Leadership, Leading Organizational Change, Complexity Science and Leadership Realities, Management and Organizational Dynamics, Managerial Reality, Classic and Contemporary Management Theory, Topics in Organizational Behavior, Management of Human Resources, Research Methods, and Business Finance.

His scholarly interests focus on organizational change, organizational sages, personal values, the self-study of teaching, and complexity science. Dr. Stackman is the co-author of Managing Organizational Change (3rd Edition) and has published articles or chapters in the Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory, Emergence: Community & Organization , World Futures, the Journal of Higher Education, the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, the Journal of Management Education, and the Handbook of Organizational Climate and Culture.

Professionally, Dr. Stackman has worked for a daily newspaper – writing and editing copy – and a credit bureau.
