Tips:
Before
you print the contents of a particular site - go to the options
section and click "show location." This will add the
url address to your printed copy - very helpful when doing references
or just trying to get back to the site.
When
searching, press to the "go" button on the tool bar
to see a history of where you have been. Then click on the site
when you want to return to that location. It clears after you
log off, as it only works for the current online session.
Bookmarks
are a must for survival in your searching. When you find a site
you like merely go to the tool bar and click "bookmark"
- the site title and url (address) will be stored in the Bookmark
location. Setting up folders for your bookmarks will keep them
manageable. To create folders go to the "windows"
and locate "bookmarks" - click - this will allow you
to also edit the title of the site to help you remember why
you saved it.
The topics listed
below offer a variety of resources to support you in your learning
experince at CPS, workplace and your daily life. |
| Search Engines |
| If
your subject is broad (organizational behavior, politics, management)
start with a directory such as Yahoo! -- that categorizes Web
sites by subject. Just pick the most likely subject, then drill
down through layers of subcategories until you find what you
want.
For a comprehensive
search, use several search engines or try a meta-search engine,
such as Metacrawler, that simultaneously queries numerous engines.
Read
the instructions before using a search engine. Each engine has
its own quirks, and knowing them will help youcraft a more accurate
search.
When
using a search engine:
- Six
to eight key words about your topic will help narrow your
search.
- Use
nouns whenever possible.
- Put
most important word first.
- Using
phrases instead of words usually increases your search's accuracy.
- Put
quotation marks around the phrase.
- If
a search engine offers to refine the results of your initial
query - try it.
- When
you find a good Web site on your topic, check to see if it
offers links to similar sites.
- Double
check your spelling.
This is not intended
to be a comprehensive listing - there are hundreds of search
engines. These are some we have found to be most useful. If
you have a favorite you would like included, please e-mail the
Webmaster.
