Designing a Research Project

DESIGNING A RESEARCH PROJECT: FIRST STEPS

1. What topic did you select?

2. Identify two possible organizational problems or issues associated with the topic you selected.

3. Select one and frame a relevant research question associated with the problem.

4. Specify the variables.

4.1 What is the independent variable?

42. What is the dependent variable(s)?

5. Construct a normative definition of your variables for the purpose of your study.

5.1 Independent variable:

5.2 Dependent variable(s):

6. Form a research objective or hypothesis that emerges from the research question.

7. Why is this study important to do?

7.1 What are the benefits that will accrue?

8. What are the limitations of this study?

8.1 That is, what is its scope?

8.2 What can you say about the generalizability of the findings beyond the study sample?

9. Construct an operational definition for your variables. That is, what are the categories of each and how might you collect data to measure them, e.g., standardized test, questionnaire, interview, company records, etc?

9.1 Independent variable:

9.2 Dependent variable(s):

10. Identify a possible control or intervening variable(s). Develop an operational definition, specify its categories and how you would measure it.
