GEC Requirements

For students admitted/readmitted prior to Fall 2003

(Students admitted/readmitted Fall 2003 and there after, please refer to Core Curriculum Requirements.)

All CPS students are required to complete 36 GEC (General Education Curriculum) units to meet USF graduation requirements. GEC units do not have to be completed in order to start a program at USF. The GEC is designed to help USF students to develop the skills, knowledge, and cultural awareness essential to a liberal education. The distribution of the required units is outlined below. Requirements marked by an X will be satisfied by your major, leaving 21 units to complete.

How You Can Meet Your GEC Requirements?

Fifteen units of GEC requirements are satisfied by courses in your major. The remaining 21 units are not covered by your program. These requirements may be satisfied by transfer credits that you bring to the program, transfer credits (up to 12) after you start your program, CLEP exams, USF Portfolio essay credits, USF Extended Education courses (online or weekend courses), and other USF courses.

Public Speaking (3 units) A course in which students prepare and deliver various speeches/presentations. This requirement can also be satisfied by Portfolio units, but not by CLEP.

Philosophy (3 units lower division) An introductory philosophy course satisfies this requirement. It cannot be satisfied through the USF Portfolio or by CLEP.

Religious Studies (3 units lower and 3 units upper division) Most religion or theology courses fulfill this requirement. It can also be satisfied by Portfolio units, but not by CLEP.

  World Religions, Comparative Religions, Philosophy of Religion, History of Christianity   English: The Bible as Literature  

World/Western Civilization (3 units) A history course on Western Civilization or another regional civilization satisfies this requirement. Generally, the history of the specific country is not sufficient. This requirement may also be satisfied by Portfolio or CLEP units.
